Extra-Hole Matches Highlight Saturday’s Play at The Farrell

GREENWICH, Conn. (October 3, 2026) – A pair of extra-hole matches for Ina Kim-Schaad highlighted Saturday’s play at The 5th Farrell, with the two-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion winning 24- and 22-hole contests to advance to Sunday morning’s semifinal round at The Stanwich Club. On the day, six matches went to extra holes with four coming in the women’s mid-amateur bracket.

Kim-Schaad did so against two of her teammates for the upcoming French-American Challenge matches, edging Mimi McAndrew of Piping Rock in 24 holes and Hana Ku of Meadow Brook in 22 holes just as darkness set in.

“We started trading birdies and going back and forth,” said Kim-Schaad of the late stages against Ku. “As it’s getting darker and we’re both exhausted it’s hard to be in it and read the putts the right way. I would say the putting was the hardest part. … Both matches were super super fun, very solid…”

Kim-Schaad, who carried the No. 1 seed into match play, will meet No. 4 seed and 2025 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Kimberly Dinh of Midland Country Club (Mich.). Dinh also had an extra-hole match, defeating Katrin Wolfe of Sunnehanna Country Club in 19 holes before eliminating inaugural Farrell champion Catherine McEvoy of Stanwich, 3 and 2. Kim-Schaad and Dinh played one another in the Round of 64 of the 2026 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Montclair Golf Club, with Kim-Schaad taking the 3-and-2 victory.

In the other semifinal matchup, reigning champion Lauren Greenlief of International Country Club (Va.) will face Corinna Limbocker of Tuxedo. Greenlief had a 7-and-5 victory in the morning over Kelly Strickland of Rivermont Golf Club (Ga.) before outlasting another past Farrell champion, Jackie Rogowicz of Merion, in 19 holes.

Limbocker took down Alyssa Roland of Watchung Valley, 3 and 2, in the morning and No. 2 seed Katie Woodruff of Council Fire Club (Tenn.)

Double-digit seeds had their way on Saturday, with five taking victories in the Round of 16. Three more added an afternoon victory, as MGA eClub – CT member Thomas McCarthy (No. 16), Rij Patel of Country Club of York (Pa., No. 10 seed) and John Lazor of Oyster Harbors Club (Mass., No. 11 seed) all advanced to the semifinals.

No. 4 seed David Kitt of Athery Golf Club (Ireland) ousted fellow Irishman David Reddan of Castleknock Golf Club, 6 and 5, in the morning before outlasting Ben Cooley of Hungtindon Valley (Pa.) in 19 holes to secure his spot in the finals.

McCarthy, who made the bracket from a 2-for-1 playoff, defeated medalist Mark Costanza of Baltusrol, 4 and 3. He won the first three holes and, though Costanza won Nos. 5 and 6 to trim the deficit to one, won Nos. 13-15 to close out the match.

Patel took down Mac Webster of Baltimore Country Club in the morning before edging No. 15 seed Seiji Liu of Los Angeles Country Club in the afternoon, 6 and 5, as Liu battled a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Lazor took down a pair of decorated MGA competitors, defeating Matt Lowe of Bethpage, 4 and 3, in the morning before edging Brad Tilley of Sleepy Hollow, 1 up.

Lazor stood one down with three to play, but made birdie on the par-5 17th to tie the match and earned the victory with a par on 18.

“It’s my last tournament of the season, so if it goes well, it goes well,” said Lazor.

While McCarthy is playing in The Farrell for the first time since its inaugural year in 2022, each of the other three semifinalists are making their first appearance in the event.

In the senior bracket, the morning’s opening round featured several big wins with Jeff Putman of Winged Foot taking the closest match by a 1-up margin over Pat Pierson of Hollow Brook. In the afternoon, No. 2 seed Ned Zachar followed up a 7-and-6 morning victory with a 3-and-2 win over Stanwich’s own Kurtis Babczenko to advance to the semifinal round.

“I haven’t played as much competitive golf this year but, this was on my calendar going back to April and May,” said Zachar, who’s the current MGA president. “I’ve been swinging great, but like I said haven’t had quite enough reps from a competitive standpoint. At the end of the day, it’s all kind of coming together and hopefully I can continue what I’ve been doing, which is fairways and greens, making good four or five six footers.”

Zachar will face another Stanwich opponent in Al Lefevre on Sunday morning. Lefevre dispatched his fellow clubmate Michael McLaughlin, 6 and 5, then defeated Putman by a 4-and-3 margin in the afternoon.

On the upper portion of the bracket, No. 8 seed Bob Beck of Lehigh Country Club (Pa.) edged medalist Jeffrey Wells of Country Club of North Carolina in the afternoon, 2 and 1. He’ll take on Scott Mackesy of Winged Foot, who bested Roger Haggerty of Tamarack (4 and 3) and Michael Guli of Trump National Bedminster (3 and 2). Mackesy is carrying momentum from the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, in which he qualified for the 64-player bracket through a playoff and then claimed a pair of matches.

Sunday morning’s semifinal round will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the senior division leading off No. 1. The men’s mid-amateurs and women’s mid-amateurs follow.
