Daniel Abbondandolo of Brookville Country Club will face off against 9 seed Joseph Dolezal of Piping Rock Club. Abbondandolo, the 16 seed, cruised through his opening match with a 6 & 5 victory over Thomas Trakoval of Port Jefferson Country Club. Trakoval had pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament a day prior, knocking out defending champion Jonathan Farber of Mill River Club in the Round of 32. Dolezal advanced with steady play in both rounds and will look to carry that momentum into Thursday’s matchup.
Another upset came from 31 seed Anthony Naples of MET PGA Junior Golf Club advancing after defeating 2 seed and stroke-play medalist Alex Gore of North Hempstead Country Club in the opening round. Naples’ run came to an end in the Round of 16, falling 2 & 1 to Evan Fulgieri of North Hempstead. Fulgieri will now square off against 7 seed Matthew Difiore, who posted a dominant 7 & 6 victory in his Round of 16 match.
Jon Sherman of St. George’s Golf & Country Club defeated 3 seed and past semifinalist Darin Goldstein of Deepdale Golf Club in the opening round. Sherman, the 30 seed, would later be edged by Joe Saladino of Huntington Country Club, who used local knowledge to his advantage to win 2 & 1. Saladino will next face off with 6 seed Peter Scialabba of Meadow Brook Club, who continued his consistent form through both rounds.
Mackenzie Kim of Indian Island Golf Club and Will Weissberg of Huntington Crescent Club finished the day with Kim earned his spot after a tight match against collegiate teammate Brad Castaldy of MGA eClub – Long Island. While Weissberg advanced in a close contest of his own.Â
Quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.
