Silverman, Farber, Advance to Finals of Long Island Amateur
EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. (July 10, 2024) The finals are set after day three of the 101st Long Island Amateur Championship Presented by Webster Bank. Max Silverman of the Glen Oaks Club and Jonathan Farber of the Mill River Club will face off in tomorrow’s 36-hole final to determine a champion.
In the morning, Silverman won his quarterfinal match by defeating Robert Giuffra of Shinnecock 5 & 3. He then squared off against Darin Goldstein of Deepdale Golf Club in the semifinals.
Silverman slowly built a 3-up lead as the match reached the par-4 13th.
“Thirteen, that hole just fits my driver well. And I have been in the same place, had a nice pitching wedge in - had that exact putt in the morning, saw his line, and rolled it right in,” Silverman explained. “On fourteen, good drive, perfect second, and gave myself a five-footer up the hill to win it.”
Farber won his first match of the day, defeating Dean Muratore of the MET PGA Junior Golf Club 2 & 1. In the afternoon, he faced Char Russekoff of Gardiner’s Bay Country Club with a chance to punch his ticket to the finals.
It was a very back-and-forth match, with both players holding a 1-up lead at different moments. Standing on the thirteenth tee, Farber found himself 1-down. He went on to win holes 13 and 15 – and hold off Russekoff to win the match on the eighteenth green, 1 up.
“So this is actually my second finals of the Long Island Am,” Farber said. “ I lost in 2018 to Colby (Anderson). My attitude is to just come out, do what I have been doing, and have fun with it.”
The first 18 holes of the 36-hole championship match is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday.
