Cooper entered the final round with a two-shot lead after opening with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday. After making a bogey on the second hole, he found his groove, making a birdie on the short par-3 third hole before rattling off four birdies on the final five holes of the front nine. After two bogies and a birdie on the back nine he finished with another under-par round, remaining as the only player in the field to finish under-par over 36 holes. “It’s awesome,” said Cooper, who previously won the championship during the COVID-19 pandemic at Inwood in 2020.
“To do it back to normal is really special,” said Cooper. “To win it again at another special golf course for me and my family was really cool.”
After struggling with his ball-striking in the days leading up to the championship, Cooper found his swing just before his final round and relied on his putting throughout the tournament.
“All summer, I’ve hit it really good and felt like I haven’t made anything,” Cooper said. “Over this past weekend, I hit it really poorly and started making everything. I found something on the range for five minutes, and I think the way I was putting, I knew I’d be OK.”
Cooper credited his ability to give himself consistent birdie opportunities throughout the two days. Cold Spring’s greens proved to be a strong suit as he repeatedly converted from around the green and on the putting surface.
“The golf course was still perfect,” Cooper said. “I gave myself a lot of looks that felt like they were reasonable and just gave myself a bunch of good looks and made a bunch, which was awesome.”
Prince finished runner-up at 1-over-par 143 after rounds of 72-71. Ben Mitchell of Fresh Meadow Country Club finished in a solo third with a 2-over 144, while Jack Maerki of Meadow Brook Club finished fourth at 3-over 145.
