ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 15, 2022) — The MGA Foundation and Jay Mottola Scholarship Committee are thrilled to congratulate Sam Masters, the inaugural Jay Mottola Scholarship recipient, on his graduation from Binghamton University this spring.
“Sam is a bright young man who has faced many challenges with poise,” said MGA Foundation Director Johanna Gavin. “The JMA alleviated one more challenge, the cost of a college education. The MGA Foundation is honored to have played a part in Sam’s life; helping to open doors to a fulfilling college experience.”

Masters caddied for five seasons at Bonnie Briar Country Club in Larchmont, N.Y., and graduates Binghamton with a degree in economics along with a strong resume filled with extracurricular experiences. He was also a recipient of the Carpiniello / Santa-Donato Family Scholarship through the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund.
“I am incredibly grateful to be the first Jay Mottola Scholarship recipient,” said Masters. “There are so many things this scholarship allowed me to do, but most of all it really allowed me to fully experience everything Binghamton had to offer both in the classroom and outside of it.”
Masters says he is excited to start the next chapter of his career as he interviews for his first job out of college.
“It’s an exciting time and I’m learning a lot,” said Masters. “The interview process has been really interesting and informative. “it’s fun to figure out exactly what I want to do and speak with a lot of really great people along the way.”
The MGA Foundation, the Mottola Family, and the entire scholarship committee, wish Sam the very best in his future endeavors.
“Sam has been a great example for what it means to be a recipient of this scholarship,” said Mottola. “We are all excited for his future and certain he will do great things.”
The MGA Foundation announced the creation of the Jay Mottola Scholarship in December of 2018 to celebrate the longtime former MGA executive director. Mottola was introduced to the game as a young caddie at The Tuxedo Club and supported youth caddie initiatives throughout his 40-plus years with the MGA.
The Jay Mottola Scholarship is a significant need-based financial grant awarded to an outstanding caddie or young person who works in service to golf in the Met Area. This award is available to exceptional scholars who are eligible under their local caddie scholarship funds: from Long Island, New Jersey and Westchester.
