The 101st Westchester Open Championship Presented by Poland Spring comes first on the schedule, as the region’s top amateur and professionals will compete at The Whippoorwill Club in Armonk, N.Y., June 13-14. The club, an outstanding Charles Banks design, has previously hosted the championship in 2001 and 2005.
The layout is carved upon rugged Westchester terrain and features a special set of template holes, including the “Short” par-3 fourth hole, a “Punchbowl” at the par-4 seventh and the “Biarritz” par-3 eighth hole. It has also hosted a pair of Westchester Amateur championships and will surely provide a stern test in deciding this year’s Westchester Open champion—which has been an amateur four of the last 10 years.
Qualifiers for the Westchester Open will take place May 22 at Waccabuc Country Club and June 1 at Country Club of Otterkill.
The 104th Westchester Amateur—as well as the coinciding Senior and Super Senior Amateur championships—will head to a first-time host, as GlenArbor in Bedford Hills, N.Y., will welcome competitors July 5-7. The three-time Westchester Open host will serve as an outstanding match-play venue for the championship, with the Gary Player layout demanding accuracy from tee to green.
Amateur qualifying will take place June 6 at Harrison Meadows Country Club, while Senior and Super Senior qualifying will take place June 19 at the Summit Club at Armonk.
Taking place early in the season will be the Westchester Public Links, May 24 at Sterling Farms Golf Course in Stamford, Conn. The event will also be a qualifying round for the 75th MGA Public Links Championship, slated for June 22 at Bethpage State Park’s Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
The Westchester Junior and Boys’ Championships will take place on June 13 at Redding Country Club in Connecticut. These championships will be conducted concurrently with a qualifier for the 106th Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife, which takes place at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J., July 17-19.
The 3rd Westchester Senior Open Championship Presented by Lexus will shift in the calendar, moving from October its first two years to August 7 this season and taking place at The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. The 18-hole championships has provided another outstanding competitive experience for the region’s top amateurs and professionals aged 50 and above, with Carl Alexander and Shaun Powers claiming the title in the first two years.
Players from WGA member clubs also have the opportunity to compete in WGA divisions of the 59th MGA/WMGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship, July 18 at Watchung Valley Golf Club in Watchung, N.J., and the 73rd MGA Fathery & Son Championship, which will take place at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y., with a date to be announced.
Details for the Westchester Mid-Amateur Championship, likely to be the final WGA championship of the season, are to be announced.
