Ike Championship SQR - Southampton
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (May 16, 2016) - Qualifying for the 61st Ike Championship began today at Southampton Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. A total of 16 players battled through tough wind in hopes of qualifying for the championship at Essex County Country Club on June 27 and 28.
Four players led the field to earn medalist honors: Mark Reilly of Peninsula, Brett Cooper of Seawane, Gerry Mackedon of Port Jefferson, and Christopher Gabriele of Mill River, with scores of 4-over 74. Cooper carried over his winning momentum from his recent Richardson Invitational victory earlier in the season and looks to continue his success during the Ike Championship in June.
Close behind was Zach Grossman of South Fork, Kenny Doyle Jr. of Brookville, and Russ Aue of Nassau Players at 6-over 76.
Qualifying at 7-over 77 was Rob Rusche of Hamlet, James Smoot Jr. of Huntington CC, andSteven Tarulli of Hempstead.
Rounding out the qualifiers for the day are as follows: Christian Oakley of Southampton (+8/78);Ryan McCarthy of Hempstead (+9/79), Michael Cochrane of MGA eClub – Westchester/Conn. (+9/79); Jon Keyes of Bellport (+9/79); Alan Specht of Wheatley Hills (+9/79); Jordan Kaplanof Pine Hollow (+9/79).
Southampton Golf Club played to a par 70 at 6,388 yards.
The Ike, the MGA’s stroke play championship is a 54 hole event open to amateur golfers with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.0. Today’s qualifying round was the first of five qualifying rounds throughout the Met Area to determine the final field. The next qualifying round is on May 23 at Lake Success Golf Club in Great Neck, N.Y.
